Argentina now has seven lithium operations in production and a second wave of expansions, construction projects and DLE deployment across Jujuy, Salta and Catamarca. The supplier question is becoming more specific: which packages can local industry cover, who controls procurement and where is there still room for international specialist suppliers?

The expansion cycle is now a procurement cycle
Argentina reported lithium exports of US$905 million in 2025, a record, after four projects entered production during 2024 and 2025 and lifted the country to seven producing lithium mines. The national project portfolio remains concentrated in Jujuy, Salta and Catamarca, where provincial resource authority, high-altitude logistics, water, power and local supplier rules create distinct operating environments.
That distinction matters for suppliers. A producing plant buying maintenance equipment is a different market from a construction project ordering complete process packages. A DLE module has a different technology stack from a conventional evaporation-based expansion. A project controlled by a global mining group may also centralize technology procurement differently from a joint venture that uses a strategic shareholder’s own equipment capabilities.

Rio Tinto’s Argentine lithium position can no longer be read through Rincon alone. The acquisition of Arcadium Lithium added Olaroz, Fénix and Sal de Vida to a portfolio that already included Rincon. This creates a multi-asset procurement environment spanning existing operations, new production, ramp-up and major construction.
Rincon remains the clearest large construction case. Rio Tinto has committed US$2.5 billion to expand the Salta project toward approximately 60,000 tonnes per year of battery-grade lithium carbonate. In March 2026 the company secured a US$1.175 billion financing package from IFC, IDB Invest, Export Finance Australia and JBIC. First production from the expanded project is expected in 2028, followed by a three-year ramp-up.
Fénix 1B and Sal de Vida moved into first production during Q2 2026, ahead of plan. Their supplier profile therefore shifts toward commissioning, ramp-up, reliability, operating consumables and future debottlenecking. For an equipment manufacturer, the key distinction is not simply whether Rio Tinto operates the asset. It is which operating company or project team owns the technical package and when that package is purchased.
Cauchari-Olaroz shows how modular DLE changes the sourcing model
The Cauchari-Olaroz Stage 2 expansion in Jujuy was approved under RIGI in 2026 to add 45,000 tonnes per year of LCE. Lithium Argentina and Ganfeng are now advancing an initial 10,000-tpa modular DLE facility as part of that wider expansion.
The important supplier signal is in the technology model. Lithium Argentina states that the modular strategy is designed to accelerate first production and reduce execution risk by leveraging Ganfeng’s expertise in fabricating advanced process equipment for installation at site. In other words, some of the most valuable process packages may be supplied through the strategic shareholder’s own technology and fabrication network.
That does not eliminate outside supplier demand. It changes where to look. Production wells, site preparation, water, auxiliary systems, instrumentation, automation, electrical equipment, pumping, construction, maintenance, logistics and interfaces around the DLE module can follow different purchasing routes from the core extraction technology.
Tres Quebradas combines DLE, RIGI and local supplier development
Zijin’s Tres Quebradas project in Catamarca provides the clearest example of local supplier development operating alongside imported specialist technology. The July 2026 RIGI approval covers a process plant and associated infrastructure designed for 40,000 tonnes of annual lithium-carbonate capacity using DLE.
Zijin also states that the operation promotes local industrial development through local procurement and contracts with local suppliers for equipment, materials and logistics services. This creates the supplier question that matters most to an international manufacturer: which packages can be competitively sourced in Argentina, and which remain dependent on specialized imported equipment or technology?
Supplier reading: local procurement and international technology are not opposing models. They can coexist inside the same project, with domestic firms covering civil works, logistics, fabrication and services while specialized process packages, instrumentation or proprietary technology are sourced internationally.
The operating layer matters as much as new construction
New mines generate the largest capital-equipment headlines, but operating projects create recurring demand for reliability, maintenance, replacement equipment, chemicals, water management, instrumentation and technical support. That layer becomes more important as Argentina’s installed base grows.
Eramet’s Centenario-Ratones project is useful because it shows how supplier performance becomes visible during ramp-up. Direct lithium extraction is moving from pilot language into commercial procurement. Rincon uses DLE. Tres Quebradas Phase 2 is approved as a DLE project. Cauchari-Olaroz is engineering a modular DLE facility. Eramet operates an industrial-scale DLE system at Centenario-Ratones.
That does not create one standardized DLE supplier market. Different technologies can require different sorbents, membranes, filtration, water treatment, pumping, heat management, reagents, automation and downstream purification. Some operators rely on internal or shareholder-linked technology. Others test independent technology providers or integrate specialist equipment from several vendors.
The commercial opening for European and other international suppliers is therefore broader than owning a complete DLE process. It can sit in the surrounding process stack: pumps, valves, filtration, separation, instrumentation, analyzers, automation, electrical systems, water treatment, heat exchange, corrosion-resistant materials, specialist engineering, commissioning and high-altitude maintenance.

Argentina already has a supplier base — and measurable gaps
The strongest recent evidence comes from the mining-supplier study presented on August 18, 2026 by the Unión Industrial Argentina together with BID and CAEM. The study examined 91 procurement categories and identified Argentine supply in 73 of them.
That is a substantial domestic base across engineering, metalworking, chemicals, logistics and related capabilities. The same study identifies important gaps in capacity, certifications, homologations, financing and coordination with demand. For international specialists, those gaps matter more than a generic claim that Argentina needs imported mining equipment.
The commercial question is whether a foreign supplier fills a technology or capacity gap that operators cannot easily solve through existing Argentine suppliers — and whether that supplier can meet qualification, delivery, technical-service and high-altitude execution requirements.
The opportunity is not “foreign versus local.” The practical market is built from combinations of local execution, international technology, operator standards and project-specific procurement.
Jujuy becomes a concentrated supplier research environment in October

Operator names are visible. Package ownership is often less visible. The relevant buyer can sit with a project company, strategic shareholder, EPC, DLE technology provider, integrator or operating-site procurement team.
Which parts of the procurement stack can Argentine suppliers cover, and where is specialist international capacity still required?
The UIA–BID–CAEM study identifies broad domestic capacity but also gaps in scale, certification, homologation, financing and coordination. The commercial task is to identify those gaps at category and project level.
Which projects are close enough to procurement to justify commercial resources now?
A producing mine, a ramp-up asset, an approved expansion and a feasibility-stage project generate different demand. Timing has to be mapped against engineering, permitting, financing, construction and operating milestones.
Where Published Information Stops
Public sources establish the project pipeline, ownership structures, major RIGI approvals, production targets and broad supplier environment. They do not provide a complete package-level procurement calendar.
